Understanding pregnancy massage and its nurturing benefits

Pregnancy is a powerful and transformative experience. But as the body adapts to support new life, it can also bring a number of physical changes and emotional shifts that leave you feeling drained, achy, or just not quite yourself. Pregnancy massage can offer a gentle and supportive way to find comfort, relaxation, and a deeper connection with your changing body.

This article will explore what pregnancy massage is and its remarkable benefits, and guide you on when and where to seek this nurturing touch.

what is a pregnancy massage?

Pregnancy massage, also known as prenatal massage, is a bodywork therapy specifically designed to address the unique needs of mums-to-be. Unlike a regular massage, pregnancy massage considers the physiological changes occurring during pregnancy. This includes adjustments in positioning for the comfort and safety of both you and your baby. Often performed with you lying on your side, supported by cushions and pillows, the techniques used are gentle yet effective in relieving discomfort and promoting relaxation.

Technically, a pregnancy massage involves modified massage techniques that avoid deep pressure on specific areas and focus on promoting healthy circulation, easing muscle tension, and reducing swelling. It’s crucial to seek a qualified therapist specifically trained in prenatal massage, as they understand the contraindications and adaptations necessary to provide a safe and beneficial experience throughout your pregnancy.

the benefits of a pregnancy massage

Pregnancy massage offers a number of benefits to nourish both your physical and emotional wellbeing:

physical benefits of a pregnancy massage

  • Reducing Back Pain and Joint Discomfort: The shifting weight and hormonal changes of pregnancy can often lead to backaches, sciatica, and joint pain. Gentle, intentional massage techniques can help to release muscle tension, improve posture, and alleviate these common discomforts¹.
  • Easing Swelling and Improving Circulation: Fluid retention and reduced circulation are common during pregnancy. Massage can help to promote healthy blood and lymph flow, reducing swelling in the legs and ankles².
  • Relieving Muscle Tension: Pregnancy can bring on muscle stiffness and tension in various parts of the body, sometimes leading to headaches. Massage can help to release this tension, promoting relaxation and easing discomfort³.

emotional benefits of a pregnancy massage

  • Reducing Stress and Anxiety: The emotional rollercoaster of pregnancy can lead to stress and anxiety. The nurturing touch of massage promotes the release of endorphins, natural mood boosters, which can help you to feel calmer and more balanced⁴.
  • Improving Sleep Quality: Discomfort and anxiety can often disrupt sleep during pregnancy. By easing physical tension and promoting relaxation, massage can contribute to more restful and deeper sleep⁵.
  • Promoting Wellbeing: Taking dedicated time for yourself and nurturing your body through massage can improve overall wellbeing and connection with your pregnancy⁶.

are pregnancy massages safe?

When performed by a qualified and trained therapist, pregnancy massages are generally safe throughout your pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters⁷. However, it’s always recommended to consult with your doctor or healthcare provider before receiving a pregnancy massage, especially if you have any pre-existing health conditions or pregnancy-related concerns.

It’s important to choose a therapist who understands the specific needs and contraindications of pregnancy massage. They will avoid certain pressure points and make sure your positioning is safe and comfortable.

when should I get a pregnancy massage?

While you can enjoy the benefits of pregnancy massage in your second and third trimesters, many find it particularly beneficial as the pregnancy progresses and physical discomfort increases. Pregnancy back pain, often caused by stretching muscles and ligaments and the hormone relaxin, generally worsens as you reach full term⁸. Listening to your body and discussing the timing with your doctor and a qualified massage therapist will help you determine what feels right for you.

Due to the higher risk in the first trimester, at endota, body massages and body treatments are typically not recommended during this time, so please always share your news with us when booking and at the time of your treatment.

when to avoid having a pregnancy massage

While generally safe, there are certain situations when a pregnancy massage may not be recommended. It’s crucial to inform your therapist and consult your doctor if you experience any of the following:

  • First trimester of pregnancy
  • Any pregnancy-related health concerns, such as preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, or severe morning sickness
  • Vaginal bleeding or abdominal pain
  • Premature labour contractions
  • Sudden or severe swelling
  • High fever
  • Any contagious skin condition.

This list is not exhaustive, and it’s always best to err on the side of caution and seek professional medical advice.

how to give a simple pregnancy massage at home

While a professional pregnancy massage offers significant benefits, there are gentle ways your partner can provide some comfort at home:

  • Gentle Shoulder and Neck Massage: Using slow, kneading motions can help to ease tension in the shoulders and neck. Ensure to avoid firm pressure on the tops of shoulders during pregnancy.
  • Foot and Leg Massage: Light strokes from the ankles up the legs can help to improve healthy circulation and reduce swelling. Ensure to avoid firm pressure around the ankles during pregnancy.
  • Lower Back Support: Gentle, circular motions on the lower back (avoiding direct pressure on the spine) can provide some much-needed relief.
Always use a gentle touch and avoid deep pressure, especially on the abdomen and legs. Ensure the pregnant person is comfortable and supported. Remember, these at-home techniques are for gentle comfort and relaxation and do not replace the expertise of a qualified prenatal massage therapist.

pregnancy massage FAQs

What’s the difference between a prenatal and a pregnancy massage?

The terms are often interchangeable and refer to a massage specifically adapted for pregnancy.

Which areas should not be massaged during pregnancy?

Deep pressure on certain acupressure points, particularly on the shoulders, ankles and wrists, is generally avoided during pregnancy. The abdomen should only be massaged very gently, if at all, and with extreme caution.

Is a pregnancy massage safe during the first trimester?

Body massages and body treatments are typically not recommended during the first trimester. This is because the first trimester carries the highest risk for both the mother and unborn baby. These treatments may increase body heat, blood flow, and blood pressure, and involve massage sequences that could cause discomfort.

How long does a pregnancy massage take?

Pregnancy massage durations can vary, but typically range from 60 to 90 minutes, allowing for a full treatment with careful positioning and attention to comfort.

How often should I get a pregnancy massage?

The frequency of pregnancy massage can vary depending on your individual needs and comfort levels. Some individuals benefit from weekly massages, while others find bi-weekly or monthly treatments helpful. Discuss what’s right for you with your doctor and endota massage therapist.

Are endota therapists specifically trained for pregnancy massages?

endota therapists receive training to provide nurturing and caring treatments for our clients, adapting techniques for their comfort and safety. Our Pregnancy Massage is specifically performed by therapists who hold a current pregnancy massage certificate.

What treatments are safe during pregnancy at endota?

Our Organic Infusion Facial can be enjoyed at any stage of pregnancy. Treatments such as the Pregnant Pause, manicures, pedicures, and spray tans are also suitable throughout all trimesters. Some adjustments are made to these treatments, such as not using essential oils, products containing retinol, or machinery with an electric current, to ensure that the treatment remains safe for both mother and baby.

That said, we generally don’t recommend body massages or body treatments during the first trimester, or if you’re trying to conceive, including IVF. If you have any pregnancy-related health concerns, it’s always best to check with your doctor before booking.

What can I expect during a treatment at endota while pregnant?

During any treatment at endota while pregnant, we will avoid the use of essential oils, abrasive machinery and tools with electric currents. The treatment bed’s electric blanket will be turned off, and you’ll have extra support for comfort. For pregnancy massage, you will lie on your side. Other treatments will be done with the bed inclined to a comfortable reclined position. Our focus is on maintaining your comfort and relaxation.

Are there any treatments that aren’t safe during pregnancy at endota?

Yes. We avoid clinical peels, glycolic peels, laser genesis, LED machinery, hydro-microdermabrasion, electro-mesotherapy, retinol-based products, and salicylic-based products during pregnancy. This is to prevent overstimulation or aggravation of your skin and to ensure no electric currents travel through you and your baby.

What products can I use from endota while pregnant?

Our entire Organics Face and Body range, including our specially formulated mother and baby range: Organics Nurture, are safe for use during pregnancy. Many products in our other ranges are also suitable; always check the label to be sure or ask your endota therapist, and use only as directed.

everyone should experience wellbeing
