Artist Jen Sievers on her art featuring in endota’s Mother’s Day campaign

Like the artists before her (Jackie Green, Beth Kennedy and Xander Holliday, to name a few), New Zealand artist Jen Sievers put brush to canvas to deliver the artwork that features on endota’s Mother’s Day gifting range and campaign this year.

We spoke to Jen who paints from her home studio in the foothills of the Waitakeres about her art, the campaign and motherhood ahead of this Mother’s Day.

The term ‘mother nurture’ is featured across our mother’s day campaign alongside your artwork. What does this term mean to you?

I think that as mothers, we spend so much time nurturing everyone around us. We give a lot of our time, energy and love, but we don’t always take time to nurture ourselves or be nurtured. I like to take time to nurture my heart and soul, even if it’s just a few moments a day. If we show ourselves some love, we grow in our capacity to pass it on to others.

What does being a mother to your daughter mean to you?

Being a mum is a world of contradictions. It’s my greatest privilege and job but also the scariest, most difficult thing I’ve ever done. Through my relationship with my daughter, I’ve learned and am still learning so much about myself.

What’s something your daughter has taught you?

Every day she inspires me to be more authentically myself. My daughter is a strong-willed, creative, unique child who has forged her own path from the day she set foot on this planet.  She has also shown me my own strength – parenting is tough, and there are days when I don’t think I can cope with it, but together we find our way!

She is also teaching me the art of apology – it amazes me how beautifully she’ll apologise and make amends after we have a rocky moment. I love how quickly we can move from having an argument to her making me a cup of tea with a sweet little love note and some cuddles on the couch. I guess that’s real love – always coming back to each other.

How will you be spending this mother’s day?

With my beautiful girl, a lot of delicious food and time outside in nature. Maybe we’ll go for a walk with my fur babies at one of our precious West Coast beaches.

Your quote ‘breathe in the extraordinary life you’ve created and hold it in your heart with gratitude’ is beautiful. How do you practice gratitude?

Gratitude is a practice I’ve been nurturing for many years and comes second nature to me now. It really is like a muscle that develops with repetition. I like to slow down most mornings and write in my journal. Having that time to myself helps me put things into perspective – to turn down the noise of worry and to do lists in my mind, soaking up the awe and wonder of this beautiful life.

I also like to add little practices to my day – when I walk with my dogs, when I drink a cup of tea, if I notice a pretty beam of light. I slow down and put my hand on my heart in gratitude, because this truly is a magical existence!

As inspiration for the gifters out there, what would you hope to receive for mother’s day this year from endota?

I adore the Deep Hydration Moisturiser, it’s like a hug for my face! I’d also pick the Revive Spa Package. It’s been a crazily busy year so far, and the idea of reviving my body, face, and tired little feet sounds just perfect. I would also pick an Organic Infusion Facial because it sounds so nourishing.

five of your artworks feature across our mother’s day campaign. what is the meaning behind these pieces?

I believe in a few strange and interesting things. One of them is that art has the ability to transform the lives of the people that live with it. It does this through the energy that the artist puts into the artwork – kind of like a beautiful magic spell, woven into every stroke.
Each one of these paintings is a positive, playful spell, shifting energies and opening doors to whoever is willing. I created these artworks a few years ago, and they focus on creating magic and abundance in our daily lives.

  • alchemy of everyday things creates healing – transforming challenges into opportunities and worry into joy.
  • personal superpowers inspires trust in your own personal powers and helps you to share and communicate them with the world.
  • wild abundance creates abundance – like an oasis of treasures in a barren desert. A re-birth of new life where it didn’t feel possible.
  • undiscovered places helps us know parts of ourselves, others and the world that were previously unseen.
path of the heart guides us towards the path that our heart chooses – one of love, joy and wonder.

What was your reaction when you first saw your art across our mother’s day campaign?

I was so excited! The campaign and seasonal range look so incredible, and it always blows my mind seeing my art in a whole new context – I love that it will be bringing a little more magic into people’s lives.

I can’t wait to go to endota Spa Takapuna to see it all up close, where I’ve also got a surprise planned. Stay tuned!

Where does your artistic inspiration come from?

I’m inspired by so many things, I like to let it flow in from any angle it wants to. Over the last few years I’ve painted a lot of abstract landscapes, because our planet is just so incredibly inspiring. But I also love working in abstract – my abstracts are inspired by the sheer wonder at being alive. I believe that all artistic inspiration comes from somewhere else – somewhere a little magical – and we’re the hands that bring it to life.
