Microdermabrasion is something that you hear about a lot.. but does it really work and if so how?
What is it?
Microdermabrasion means the abrasion of the skin with the use of small “grains”. These can vary but most commonly used is a type of fine crystal. When carried out in a professional salon the machine used has a head that applies the crystals and also a vacuum to remove the crystals at the same time.
So.. will this damage the skin? NO not if carried out correctly.
The skin has many layers and all we need to remove is the top layer:The Stratum Corneum. This is a thin layer that can make the skin look dull and lifeless and also block pores.
Microdermabrasion has two main effects on the skin:
- Increase the blood flow brining nutrients to the skin and removing toxins.
- A slight swelling from the drying effect “tricking” the skin into thinking its damaged therefore producing collagen and stimulating new cells
Research has shown that by having weekly treatments over a period of time can increase the healing and repairing of the cells and therefore improving scar tissue and imperfections.
If you have any of these concerns Microdermabrasion is for you!
- Dull skin
- Scar tissue
- Open pores
- Fine lines/Wrinkles
The treatment:
Your therapist will discuss the treatment and whether a course of treatments is required.
You will have your skin cleansed and then the Microdermabrasion will start.
The therapist will check the sensation with you as this shouldn’t be painful just a little rough feeling.
This abrasion part will take about 15 minutes then a moisturising and hydrating product should be applied to counteract the drying effects.
You may be red after. This is a good thing. The redness may take from 2 hours to 2 days to clear depending on our skin sensitivity.
Your skin will feel very smooth, have a gorgeous glow and continue to look great for a while after!
Ladies..This is perfect for an instant glow for that special occasion!
Men…Think of a cut a polish for your skin!
